(interior) Design is love

I can’t get this phrase out of my head. It rings so true. (interior) Design is a deeply intimate way of saying “I love you” to yourself, your family and even your community.

Let me tell you 3 stories of love.

The ‘G’s

Both retired and looking toward the third act of their lives. They called to take action on their primary bedroom. Mrs. G knew that Mr. G was slowing down and his memory would occasionally slip. The road to his diminished capacity had begun.

Mrs. G knew they would be spending increasing amounts of time in their bedroom going forward. She wanted to make this a place where they could both be very happy and comfortable. So Mrs. G reached out to me and together we built them a bedroom with colors they love, art from their family and travels together and plenty of light to get around. This was an act of love between them in preparing for their future together. Their love fills my heart and we are all the warmer for it.

Another story of love is that for ourselves. Self-love still seems oddly controversial as some of us still carry guilt for showing ourselves care. But our ability to shine brightly and authentically for the world really does start with how we care for ourselves.

The Joneses

With both kids in college and beyond, Mr. and Mrs. Jones looked at each other and said, “This is the time.” Their 90’s-built home had all sorts of funky quirks. Their primary suite was full of half walls, awkward alcoves and no door to the bathroom. They wanted to finally do the thing they longed for. Create a spacious sanctuary where they could relax and plot their life as a couple. Bring more peace (and a door) to the most private area of their home. They could face their future (including any future renovation) from a calm and serene space.

So we did. We went about rearranging walls, creating generous storage in European essentialism and an ensuite with all the beauty and feeling of luxury they had dreamed of. A full-gut remodel. Their children were off on their new adult adventures and now Mr. and Mrs. Jones can relax and plot theirs.

A Community

A Lutheran church in Sacramento has embarked on a 3-year journey to bring more warmth and love to their church building. Not only does the extended timeline align with their 75th anniversary, but it also allows time for extensive enrollment of the congregation and community.

Over years focused on service and communion, some areas of the church have been merely maintained. This new design and remodel project delivers warmth and durability to areas used extensively by the greater community and peace and freshness to the worship sanctuary. The church leadership is taking a tremendous amount of care to include all those that wish to be included in the process and this expression of love for their community.
